Mini Split & Ductless AC Installation in Bloomfield, NJ

When a house wasn't built for central air, a ductless mini-split is usually the right answer. Basic Refrigeration Heating & AC has been installing and servicing mini-split systems across Bloomfield and Northern NJ for years, and we work on Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and the other major ductless brands that some shops won't touch. Our Master HVACR-licensed technicians handle the mini split installation, the refrigerant work, and the long-term service. If your home has hot water or steam heat, no ductwork, or a finished space that needs cooling without tearing into walls, a mini-split is built for the job.

How a Ductless Mini-Split Actually Works

A ductless mini-split system has two parts: an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers mounted high on a wall inside the house. Refrigerant runs between them through a small line set, usually a three-inch hole drilled through an exterior wall. The indoor units pull warm air across a cold coil, dump the heat outside through the compressor, and blow cooled air back into the room. There's no ductwork involved at all. That's the whole reason they exist. Older homes built with hot water or steam heat use mini-splits to add cooling without tearing into walls or ceilings.

Mini-Splits for Homes Without Ductwork

Most of the older housing stock in North Jersey was built with hydronic baseboard or steam radiator heat, which means no ductwork to carry central air. Adding ductwork to a home that wasn't built for it is expensive, invasive, and often eats ceiling height in basements and closets. A mini-split solves the cooling problem without any of that. We typically install one outdoor unit and two to four indoor air handlers, depending on the home's layout. Homes built before central air was standard are exactly the candidates this technology was designed for.

Cooling Additions, Garages, and Finished Attics

Room additions, converted garages, finished basements, and attic build-outs are the other classic mini-split use case. Extending existing ductwork into a new space is usually impractical, and a window unit looks bad and runs noisy. A wall-mounted mini-split is the clean answer. We size the indoor unit to the room's square footage, factor in insulation and sun exposure, and run the line set through the wall to the outdoor compressor. The finished spaces this works best in typically end up with a single-zone mini-split that runs quietly enough to be invisible most of the time.

Brands We Install: Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and Others

We install and service Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Daikin, LG, and the other major ductless manufacturers. Mitsubishi and Fujitsu have the longest track record in the U.S. market and the best parts and warranty support, which is why most installs default to one or the other. The right brand depends on the application, the budget, and whether the system needs to handle cold-weather heating in addition to cooling. We'll explain the real differences in plain language, not the marketing pitch, so you can make a decision based on what actually matters for your home.

Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone Mini-Split Systems

A single-zone mini-split has one outdoor unit paired with one indoor air handler, and it's the right call when you're cooling a single room or finished space. A multi-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with two, three, or four indoor handlers, each one controlling a different room or zone. Multi-zone is more efficient than running separate single-zone systems and lets you set different temperatures in different parts of the house. The trade-off is higher upfront cost and more complex installation. We'll help you figure out which configuration actually fits your layout and budget.

What goes into a mini-split installation?

A mini-split install has three pieces: the outdoor compressor unit, one or more indoor air handlers, and the refrigerant line set that connects them through the wall. We start with a walk-through to figure out where the indoor units make sense, where the outdoor unit can sit, and how the line set will route between them. The actual install involves mounting the indoor units, setting the outdoor unit on a pad or wall bracket, drilling a small line-set penetration, running electrical, and commissioning the system. Most single-zone installs finish in a day. We give you a written estimate after the walk-through, so you know the cost before any work starts.
