Whole House Air Purifier & Whole House Air Purification in Bloomfield, NJ
Whole House Air Purifier & Whole House Air Purification in Bloomfield, NJ
A whole house air purifier installs in the HVAC ductwork and actively treats the air as it passes through, instead of passively trapping particles the way a filter does. Basic Refrigeration Heating & AC has been installing whole house air purification systems across Bloomfield, Montclair, and the surrounding area since 1997. We carry iWave by Nu Calgon, the most widely deployed needlepoint bipolar ionization system on the residential market, along with photocatalytic and other in-duct technologies depending on what fits the home and the homeowner's air quality concern. Our Master HVACR-licensed technicians size and position the equipment correctly so it treats the supply air across the whole house, not just one room or one duct run.
How a Whole House Air Purifier Works
A whole house air purifier is different from a portable air purifier and different from the filtration cabinet on your furnace. The unit installs inside the ductwork, usually near the supply plenum, and actively treats every cubic foot of air that flows through the HVAC system. Different whole house air purifier technologies do this in different ways: bipolar ionization releases positive and negative ions into the airstream to neutralize pathogens and reduce particulates; photocatalytic oxidation uses UV-C light and a catalyst to break down VOCs; some systems combine multiple mechanisms in one cabinet. What they share is the active treatment model: instead of waiting for particles to hit a filter, the system actively goes after them in the airstream.
iWave Bipolar Ionization: Our Primary Product
The iWave-R from Nu Calgon is the whole house air purifier we install most often. It's a needlepoint bipolar ionization generator that mounts inside or outside the duct, or magnetically near the indoor fan. As air flows past the unit, positive and negative ions actively treat the supply air to reduce certain bacteria and viruses on the coil and in the living space, control odors (cooking, pet, VOCs), and reduce smoke and other particles. The iWave-R from Nu Calgon handles residential duct systems up to 6 tons (2,400 CFM), uses universal 24 to 240 VAC power, and is validated to UL 867 ozone requirements, meaning it doesn't produce ozone as a byproduct. The self-cleaning brush design means no replacement parts and no ongoing maintenance for the life of the unit.
Whole House Air Purification vs. Portable Units
Portable air purifiers work for one room. They sit on the floor, run a fan, pull air through a filter, and shut off when you go to sleep or move to another room. A whole house air purification system treats every cubic foot of conditioned air the HVAC system moves, which covers the entire home including bedrooms, basements, and rooms you don't spend much time in but still breathe air from. For households with allergies, asthma, pets, or anyone with respiratory sensitivities, the consistency of whole house treatment usually matters more than the peak performance of a portable unit in one room. The cost comparison also tilts toward whole-house once you account for filter replacements on multiple portable units over the years.
What an Air Purifier Does and Doesn't Solve
A whole house air purifier targets airborne biological pathogens, odors, VOCs, and some smaller particulates. It does not replace mechanical filtration for larger particles, and the EPA's guide to air cleaners is clear that air purifiers and filters work on different parts of the indoor air quality problem. For homes with dust, pollen, or pet dander as the primary complaint, the right starting point is a high-MERV media filter (which we cover under air filtration). For homes with mold growth on the coil, the right answer is a UV germicidal system. For homes where odors, VOCs, smoke, or ongoing pathogen concerns are the primary worry, a whole house air purifier is where to start. Most homes that need any of these end up benefitting from a combination.
Installation Time and What to Expect
Installation of an iWave or comparable whole house air purifier takes about an hour for the typical residential system. The unit mounts in the supply plenum, gets wired into the existing 24-volt control circuit or a dedicated 24-volt power supply, and is energized to confirm it's producing ions correctly. On a system with the fan set to run continuously, the iWave runs whenever the fan runs; on a system that cycles the fan with cooling or heating, it only purifies when air is flowing. We recommend setting the fan to 'on' rather than 'auto' for the first 72 hours after install so the purifier can address whatever air quality concern prompted the installation. After that, it's a personal preference between continuous-fan operation (better ongoing air quality, higher blower runtime) and on-with-cooling operation (lower energy use, intermittent treatment).
A whole house air purifier installed in the HVAC ductwork actively treats the air as it flows through the system, instead of passively filtering particles out of it. Depending on the technology, that treatment can include releasing ions to neutralize pathogens and reduce particulates (bipolar ionization), using UV-C and a catalyst to break down VOCs (photocatalytic oxidation), or other active mechanisms. The result, for most homeowners, is reduced odors, reduced static dust, less mold growth on the coil, and fewer airborne irritants. It works on a different part of the air quality problem than a filter does, which is why most complete indoor air quality setups use both.
