Ductwork Fabrication & Installation in Bloomfield, New Jersey
Ductwork installation is the part of an HVAC project that decides whether the rest of it works. Basic Refrigeration Heating & AC has been fabricating and installing custom ductwork for North Jersey homes and businesses since 1997. When a home adds central air, gets renovated, or goes up new, the duct system has to be measured, sized, and built to match the equipment and the rooms it serves. It is the build-it-new end of our custom ductwork services. Our Master HVACR-licensed technicians measure the structure, design the runs around how the building is actually laid out, and fabricate sheet metal duct to fit the space instead of forcing stock pieces into openings they were never cut for.
When You Need New Ductwork
Most new ductwork falls into one of three situations. The first is a central air addition: a home that has had heating but never cooling needs supply and return duct sized for the new air handler, and the existing furnace ducting often cannot simply be reused. The second is a renovation, where an addition, a finished basement, or a reworked floor plan changes where the air has to go and the old layout no longer matches the rooms. The third is new construction, where the duct gets designed into the building from the start. In all three, the common thread is that the duct has to be built for this house and this equipment, not adapted from something close enough.
Why a Custom Fit Beats Prefabricated Duct
Stock duct fittings are made to standard dimensions. Houses are not. When prefabricated pieces get forced into spaces they were not designed for, the result is gaps at the joints, sharp transitions that choke airflow, and runs that are longer or more crooked than they need to be. Each of those costs you something. Leaks waste the air the equipment already heated or cooled, and the U.S. Department of Energy points to duct losses as a significant source of wasted energy in a typical home. Restrictions make the system work harder to push air through, and the rooms at the end of a bad run never get their share. Custom-fabricated duct is cut and formed to the actual path the air needs to take, with smooth transitions and tight connections. The fit is what keeps the system delivering what it was sized to deliver.
How Duct Gets Sized to the Home
The air handler moves a specific volume of air, and every room needs a share of that volume in proportion to its heating and cooling load. Undersized duct starves rooms and makes the blower strain. Oversized duct slows the air too much to throw it where it needs to go. The industry method for getting this right on residential systems is ACCA Manual D, which sizes each run from the room loads and the blower capacity. We design the layout around the home square footage, the building envelope, and the equipment, so the air that leaves the air handler arrives balanced across the house.
Residential and Commercial Ductwork
Custom ductwork is not only a residential job. Commercial spaces such as restaurants, offices, retail, and light industrial buildings have duct needs that often run larger and more demanding than a house, with longer runs, higher airflow, and equipment sized for a full space rather than a few rooms. We can fabricate and install duct for both. The design logic is the same in either setting: size the system to the load, build the duct to fit the building, and connect it tightly so the conditioned air reaches the far end of the run.
What a Ductwork Installation Involves
First, we start with a walkthrough of the space and the existing system, if there is one. The first step is understanding the layout, the equipment, and where the air has to go. From there, the runs get designed and the sheet metal gets fabricated to match. Installation routes the supply and return duct through the building, seals the connections, and ties the system into the air handler. The last step is confirming the air actually reaches each room the way the design intended. The goal through all of it is a duct system that disappears into the building and quietly delivers the comfort the equipment produces.
Yes. A home with no existing duct, or with duct that only served an old heating system, can have a full supply and return system designed and installed for central air or a heat pump. The work is more involved than modifying existing duct because every run is new, but it is a routine part of adding central cooling to an older home. The design starts from the rooms and the equipment, and the duct gets routed through whatever path the building allows: basements, attics, closets, and soffits.
