Commercial Refrigerator Repair in Bloomfield, New Jersey
Refrigeration Maintenance & Installation in Bloomfield, New Jersey
When a restaurant refrigerator goes down, the clock starts. Product spoils, inventory walks out the door, and the health inspector doesn't care whose fault it was. Basic Refrigeration Heating & AC has been repairing commercial refrigerators since 1997, and refrigeration is literally the name on the truck. We work on reach-ins, prep tables, display cases, sandwich and pizza prep units, beverage coolers, and back-of-house storage refrigeration across Bloomfield, Montclair, and the surrounding North Jersey area. Our Master HVACR-licensed technicians handle the refrigerant work that EPA rules require, and we carry the common parts on the truck so most repairs finish in a single visit.
When Your Commercial Refrigerator Isn't Cooling
A commercial refrigerator that's running but not holding temperature is a different problem than one that's flat-out dead. The most common causes are a dirty condenser coil restricting heat transfer, a failed condenser fan motor, a refrigerant leak, a stuck defrost cycle, or a weak compressor. Door gaskets that no longer seal properly waste cooling and force the compressor to run constantly, which shortens its life. We diagnose what's actually failing before quoting a repair, because swapping parts hoping one fixes it is how restaurants get stuck with bills for parts they never needed. Restaurants and delis call us when they need the diagnosis right the first time.
Reach-In Refrigerators: What Goes Wrong and How We Fix It
Reach-in refrigerators are the workhorses of a commercial kitchen, and they're the refrigeration unit most likely to fail because they get opened and closed hundreds of times a day. Common failure points include the door gaskets, which wear out after a few years of heavy use; the condenser fan motor, which clogs with kitchen grease and burns out; the evaporator coil, which ices over when the defrost cycle fails; and the door hinges and self-closing mechanisms, which let the doors stop fully closing and force the compressor to run constantly. We stock gaskets, fan motors, and the common control parts for True, Beverage-Air, Continental, and the other major commercial reach-in brands. Most reach-in repairs finish in a single visit.
Display Cases and Glass-Door Refrigerators
Refrigerated display cases and glass-door merchandisers fail in slightly different ways than back-of-house reach-ins. The glass itself is fine, but the door seals, hinges, and anti-sweat heaters around the glass perimeter wear out under daily customer use. Lighting ballasts and LED strips fail more often than the refrigeration components themselves on newer units. The refrigeration side has its own quirks: small overcharged or undercharged systems are common because display cases are often sold pre-charged, and any leak repair requires careful recharging to spec. Delis, convenience stores, and specialty food shops rely on these cases to drive sales, so the downtime cost is real.
Prep Tables, Sandwich Stations, and Pizza Prep Units
Refrigerated prep tables are the most punished refrigeration equipment in a commercial kitchen. They run with the lid open for most of service, get hit with food residue and cleaning chemicals constantly, and rarely get the inside scheduled for the kind of cleaning the manufacturer recommends. The most common failures are clogged condenser coils that need thorough cleaning, failed evaporator fans, and refrigerant losses around the suction line fittings. Pizza prep units have the added stress of cooling cheese and toppings to safe holding temperature while the lid sits open for hours. We service prep tables for restaurants, pizzerias, and catering kitchens throughout the area.
Same-Day Commercial Refrigeration Service
When a commercial refrigerator fails, the cost grows by the hour. Product loss alone can run hundreds or thousands of dollars before a technician even arrives. We prioritize same-day service for active commercial refrigeration failures, and we'll tell you up front when we can be there. If we can't get the part on the truck, we'll tell you the timeline before any work starts. For longer-term equipment failures where replacement makes more sense than repair, we can usually sort that out on the same call and start sourcing equipment immediately. Many of our commercial customers also keep us on a preventive maintenance schedule so the failures happen less often in the first place.
The most common causes are a clogged condenser coil that can't shed heat, low refrigerant from a slow leak, a failed condenser fan motor, or a defrost cycle that's gotten stuck and iced over the evaporator. Door gaskets that no longer seal properly can also cause it. Before you call, check whether the condenser coil (usually behind a removable grille at the bottom or top of the unit) is clogged with dust and grease. Cleaning it sometimes resolves the issue. If it's clean and the unit still isn't holding temperature, the next step is a real diagnosis.
